Homemade Everything Bagel Spice

There is nothing more that I love than a whole wheat everything bagel. I have a replay going on in my head all of the great bagels that I have eaten when I lived in New York City. I could probably write a book on my NYC bagel adventures. Those crusty, chewy, big soft bagels.

My favorite are the ones in the morning straight out of the oven. The crust is unbelievable! When I lived on Wall Street, there was a tiny shop called Leo’s Bagels. It was to die for! I would always order a turkey avocado BLT minus mayo, plus mustard.

Ingredients

1/4 cup dried onion flakes

1/4 cup dried garlic flakes

1/4 cup poppy seeds

1/4 cup black sesame seeds

1/4 cup white sesame seeds

1 tablespoon maldon salt or flaky sea salt

I can't express how much I love this spice. Put it on everything!! Here are some suggestions of what to put it on: eggs, avocado toast, salmon, salads, sandwiches like turkey BLT, tuna, chicken or egg salad. Or you can try what’s in the picture is avocado toast with smoked salmon and bagel spice.

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a jar and shake!

  2. Put it on everything: eggs, avocado toast, salmon, salads and anything you would eat an everything bagel with!

  3. Store in fridge up to 3 months.

Chef Carla Notes

  1. For that just baked bagel flavor, place one tablespoon of the spice in a dry, cold sauté pan. Heat on medium 2-3 minutes or until you smell the garlic and onion.
  2. This is not a cooking project you walk away from. Stay close so you don’t burn it.

When I moved to Williamsburg Brooklyn, there was The Bagel Shop, now famous for rainbow bagels. I didn’t find out until years later but Ed used to leave my apartment early in the morning to go to work in New Jersey. On his way, he would stop and get a super cinnamon bagel with Nutella cream cheese (argh!). There weren’t any other coffee shops open at that hour – I forgive him!

I have wanted to try the Trader Joes version of “Everything Minus the Bagel Seasoning” but our local TJ never has it. I decided to make my own – it’s incredibly easy to make! The spice mix would make a great gift. Nothing says, “I love you,” like dried onion and garlic. Here are some suggestions of what to put it on: eggs, avocado toast, salmon, salads, sandwiches like a turkey BLT, tuna, chicken or egg salad. Or you can try what’s in the picture, avocado toast with smoked salmon and bagel spice.
